I take Oxycontin. It is effective for about eight hours (not the advertised
12).

According to a good friend who is a pharmacist and teaches courses at Ohio
State University on prescription drug abuse and addiction, only about 1% of
pain patients become truly "addicted" in layman's terms. (sorry for the
run-on sentence)

It takes a while to titrate the appropriate dose for relief and there has to
be the understanding that if there is no alternative therapy for pain
reduction, narcotics may be a life-long solution.

My own chronic pain started in 1995 and I've been on one form of narcotic,
at carying levels, since 1997.

From my own experience, it's easy to go beyond the bounds of the MD's Rx and
take more than the prescribed dose when you have "break-thru" pain. This is
NOT GOOD. You MUST be in constant contact with your doctor if the dose is
not working. This summer, I elevated my own dosage and then lied about it
to my wife. All I had to do was pick up the phone and let the physician
know my pain was not under control. Took the matter into my own hands and
deeply hurt the person I love most in this world. Be careful!

We've tried that. I have even gone with her to the doctors but it
doesn't do any good. What is the name of the new drug? Is is
Oxycontin?

I am now on a new drug it's for pain, And works really well. Talk to
your
doctor!
those of us who have severe pain tend NOT to get addicted to pain meds.
It is
imperative that you make your doctor understand your pain.
