Kathy,
AFOs are braces-- ankle foot orthotics to be precise they usually cover
the base of your foot and go up just to below your knee. Most of them look
like boots with no fronts/tops. They are usually made of plastic, but
sometimes metal, can be solid or hinged to allow foot movement.
My new ones will be rear entry-- most of the plastic will be at the front of
my leg, the velcro closures at the back. They will be hinged to allow
plantarflexion (pointing your toes down to the floor), and include a little
"bootie" that is about the height of a high top shoe for medial lateral
(side-to-side) stability. They will have butterflies on them, too, thanks to
my orthotist having access to pattern transfers.
Hope this helps
Jenn
