Nancy-My daughter Sarah is 12. Still wears diapers, has CP, & is in a
wheelchair full time, Has cataracts ( 1 was removed last summer & has an
inplant) I dread what we will do when she gets her period. She is 98
pounds--so very hard for me to lift..her dad helps with diaper changes..but
says he draws the line. No underarm hair yet...and we did shave 1 time for
a big family party...but she is telling me many of her friends now shave
their legs..I would have to do it for her. I certainly don't have the
answers..Sarah also is mosaic for Turners--so we weren't sure we would have
to deal with these issues...but they are arriving.....Joy

>Hi! I am a newcomer to this list. I live in Michigan and have 10-year-old
>twin girls (born at 26 weeks), both with disabilities. For some background,
>Ashley (twin A) was born weighing 1 lb. 6 oz. She is blind in her right eye
>and very near-sighted in her left. She has mild CP on her left side. She is
>currently in 3rd grade and is doing very well, considering she is learning
>Braille. She does get PT at school and tries so very hard to do things just
>like the other kids. She is having difficulty learning how to ride a bike.
>She admits to her fear of falling off (I truly am fearful that she won't be
>able to see cars). My other daughter, Breanne (twin B) weighed in at 1 lb.
>15 oz. She is severely multiply impaired--has CP on her right side, blind in
>both eyes, 2 shunts for Hydracephalus (had a trache from the time she was an
>infant but was decannulated in September 1992); seizure tendency (has only
>had 2 to speak of). Breanne can't do for herself and is in a wheelchair.
>The good news is that she has made alot of progress, but now that the girls
>are getting older, I am trying to prepare myself for puberty.
>
>In a nutshell, here is my question . . . In Ashley's case, she will be able
>to learn how to shave and take care of her own hygiene. In Breanne's case,
>however, I am wondering about the shaving. She has gotten a headstart on her
>sister with the hair growth, so now I'm thinking "My gosh, it's coming!".
>For anyone out there, how did you deal with puberty? My husband is also a
>wreck about having to deal with it. Will I need to shave Breanne's arms and
>legs as all women do as they get older?
>
>Any insight is greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from some of
>you.
