Thompson was also in the second Die Hard movie with Bruce Willis.  He
played the airport manager, I think.  So, while he wasn't a big star, he
did quite a bit of acting before being elected.

He is not a Hollywood movie Star per se. He plays the head D.A. on Law
and
Order.
I believe he was also in some of John Grisham's novels which were made
into
movies.
