Salt water and lime mortar?

Is there any reason why lime mortar should erode at a higher rate  
when flooded with salt water as opposed to brackish or fresh?  Were  
lime mortars used on shore fortifications where they were they were  
built in the water?  Dealing with brick fortification and trying to  
separate reality from oft repeated wisdom that may be convenient, but  
may not be true.
