My impression is that property values in Vermont, even in small rural
villages, are breathtakingly high by Midwest standards, especially given
the lack of many jobs in the vicinity.

On the other hand, across the state line in northern New York, without
Vermont's fabulous public image, comparable houses and farms are available
for vastly less, cheap even by Michigan standards, in some cases falling
into ruin for lack of anyone to care for them.
