Was the pedestal set in white grout or plaster?
-OR-
I was recently involved in an issue involving white terrazzo that had
discolored somewhat uniformly. Some thought it was failed material but when
people listened to the installer and actually cleaned it as opposed to
pushing around the dirt with a mop, the whiteness came back. They used
ScotchBrite pads and mild detergent then vacuumed up the water and rinse
water. I'm not sayin' you have dirty floors, just suggestin' you might wanna
try it.

Thanks,

Subject:	[BP] what specifically causes the greying of hex tile in my
1920s bathroom?

Moved out the pedestal sink in my 1923 bathroom. The hex tile it had
covered for 70+ years is strikingly white - unlike the rest of the floor
tile in the room, which is a uniform greyish-white.

If the greying of the exposed tile were due to foot traffic ("grinding in
the dirt") or similar, or if were due to dirt deposit and wetting, then I
would expect to see wide variations over the floor. But the hex tile is
uniform in white-grey color (except that which was not exposed to light),
throughout the room, whether in a distant corner or right in the path of
traffic, whether next to the sink or far from it.

Given these observations, what might explain of the greying of hex tile?

Christopher
