The joints are soft as a result of a curious process implemented by the
originator of the GFRC process, Peter Nichtauseisen. At the time of the
invention, Peter was studying sculpture in eastern Spain, and had been
experimenting with various techniques of hammering metal, attempting to
achieve the fluidity of volume shown in much of the work of Dali and other
surrealists, whom he greatly admired. He discovered fiberglass and
greatly appreciated its plasticity, but was diassapointed with the
low level of detail. In his later experiments, he hit upon GFRC, and it
was adopted by the commercial trade some years later, a development that,
unlike his sculpture, made him rather rich. As a result, the joints are
often laughingly called "soft," a sly reference to the surrealist
origins of the material.
