Do you know about the Hurlbut Gate in Detroit? It forms a very formal
entrance to the old Detroit Waterworks Park. I even found an old post
card showing how it functioned historically. It was designed in a very
florid baroque style in 1894 as a triumphal arch on a rusticated base
crowned by a slender domw. It had double grand staircases to ceremonial
terrace above the gate, and a pedestal for Chauncey Hurlbut who donated
the money. It's in a decrepit state, unfortunately, but worth seeing.
