IPTW 2003
BLANDAIR FARM
COLUMBIA, MARYLAND
OCTOBER 9-11, 2003

There is very little time left before PTN’s 7th Annual International
Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW-2003). IPTW will be held October 9th,
10th & 11th in Columbia, Maryland. Each site of an IPTW event has been
unique and provides special opportunities. This year’s event held at
Blandair Farm continues that tradition. Blandair Farm is a 300 acre
property in the middle of Columbia, which is a planned community that
was begun in the 1960's. It was designed to eliminate uncontrolled
sprawl. Blandair Farm was the one tract of land that could not be bought
and incorporated into this overall master plan. As a result Blandair
Farm represents the rural nature of Howard County prior to the building
of the planned community that now surrounds it. This unique property
within a unique community is the setting for this year’s IPTW event.

IPTW-2003 will utilize much of the historic farm complex for classrooms,
demonstration areas, camping and an overall good time and of course,
networking. The event will start Thursday morning, October 9th, at 8:30
a.m. with the opening session. The Keynote speaker will be Clem Labine,
founder and editor of Traditional Building and Period Homes magazines
and the founder of the Old House Journal. Mr. Labine will talk about
historic preservation and his view of the past, present, and most
importantly the future of preservation and how the trades can help shape
that future.

Prior to the event, special training classes will be offered. One will
be in Timber Frame Repair and another will deal with Paint Removal and
Safe Lead Paint Practices. The Timber Frame class will run from Sunday,
October 5th through Wednesday, October 8th and will utilize the old Seed
Barn on the Blandair property as its classroom. The paint removal class
will occur one or two days prior to the beginning of the IPTW event. The
classroom for this effort will be the Blandair Manor House.

The IPTW event spans three days with opening and closing sessions and 10
sessions in between. Each session is an hour and a half long. There will
be up to 11 presentations/demonstrations per session. Each
presentations/demonstration is held in a specific location. With up to
11 things going on at one time, it will be hard to see everything, which
means a wide variety of educational options, and an untold number of
networking opportunities. There are more things to see and more things
to learn that one can attend or absorb in three days.

Come join the education and the community of novices, students,
apprentices, journeymen, masters and others for three day.
