 A group of PROJECT MANAGERS were given the assignment to measure the
height of a flagpole. So they go out to the flagpole with ladders and tape
measures, and they're falling off the ladders, dropping the tape measures -
the whole thing is just a mess. A PROGRAMMER comes along and sees what
they're trying to do, walks over, pulls the flagpole out of the ground,
lays it flat, measures it from end to end, gives the measurement to one of
the managers and walks away.

 After the programmer has gone, one manager turns to another and laughs.
"Isn't that just like a programmer, we're looking for the height and he
gives us the length."

This rings so true, however you forgot the part about the ACCOUNT MANAGER,
to whom the client asks about the color of pole.  Of course, the client
really needs to know about the pole location, but they assume that knowing
the color will tell them this, as no one would put a green pole in a green
field or a red pole in front of a brick building. The account manager
naturally assumes that color and length are the same thing, so this is what
they request from the PMs.
