Mary -

I have sat through many studio crits in which Mr. Morgenstern reamed out a
student, and I frankly found it embarrassing that the message wasn't
expressed in a more professional manner. Only my opinion, but he seemed to
take a perverse pleasure in the act of making women cry (I never saw any guys
cry though I've known a few who wanted to punch him out). Histrionics have a
place, but I'm not quite sure it is in the University.

I had a sculpture prof at RISD named Joe Goto, who was a scrappy little
fellow, a David Smith type welder, whom I admired greatly, and I was
fortunate to generally be on his positive side. I saw him demolish,
literally, students' models and maquets, by jumping up and down on them
screaming "This a piece of shit!!!!" (Japanese accent). He was responsible
for several students leaving school. Funny, I don't remember any of the
actual criticisms he gave, but only the act. What the heck.
