OCTOBER 28, ????

1492  - Columbus discovers Cuba.

1636 - The Massachusetts General Court provided 400 pounds to support a
school
or college, and so, Harvard University was founded in Cambridge, MA.

1776: The Battle of White Plains was fought.

1835: Troops under General Cos attack Jim Bowie at the Mission Purisima
Concepcion. Bowie is ready and the Mexicans suffer heavy casualties and
are
forced to withdraw. William Barret Travis, in command of a volunteer
mounted
company, gives chase.

1886: The Statue of Liberty was dedicated by President Grover Cleveland
in the
presence of its sculptor, Auguste Bartholdi. on Bedloe's Island in New
York Harbor

1914: Dr. Jonas Salk born.

1919: Congress enacted the Volstead Act, which privided for enforcement
of
Prohibition, over President Wilson's veto.

1904 - Fingerprinting was first used - by the St. Louis Police
Department.

1922 - WEAF in New York broadcast the first collegiate football game
heard coast
to coast. Princeton played the University of Chicago at Stagg Field in
the Windy
City. The broadcast was carried on phone lines to New York City, where
the radio
transmission began.


1922: Benito Mussolini took control of Italy.

1924 - Fewer than 20 people paid to see an exhibition baseball game
between the
Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants. Maybe the fact that the game
was
played in Dublin, Ireland had something to do with the low turnout.
Newspapers
reported that attendance was off because church services were going on
at the time.
The Sox, incidentally, won 8-4.

 1929 - First child born in aircraft, Miami, Fl.

 1948 - The flag of Israel is adopted.

1940 - The Greek people had much to celebrate, as their resistance and
military
turned back Mussolini’s troops. Greece’s borders were closed to the Nazi

supporters. This day is still celebrated throughout Greece as Ohi (No!)
Day.

1946 - Our favorite flying cowboy was heard on ABC radio for the first
time. "Sky
King" starred Jack Lester, "Sky King" was sponsored by Mars candy.


1950 - Jack Benny took his well-known radio show [on radio for 20 years]
to
television without missing a beat.  The show lasted on TV for
twenty-seven years!

1955 - Buddy Holly from Lubbock, TX opened a concert for Marty Robbins
and
Elvis Presley.

1961 - Brian Epstein, a record store owner in London, was asked by a
customer for
a copy of the record, "My Bonnie", by a group known as The Silver
Beatles. He
didn’t have it in stock so he went to the Cavern Club to check out the
group. He
signed to manage them in a matter of days and renamed them The Beatles.


1965: Pope Paul VI issued a decree absolving Jews of collective guilt
for the
crucifixion of Jesus.

1965: Four years of construction wrap up on the Gateway to the West
monument.
"St. Louis Arch."

1996: Actor Morey Amsterdam, most famous for playing Buddy Sorrell on
the Dick
Van Dyke Show, died at age 87.

 1980 - 25th anniversary of  the "Mickey Mouse Club". Do you remember
the five
special events each week? There was Fun with Music Day on Monday, Guest
Star
Day on Tuesday, Anything Can Happen Day on Wednesday, Circus Day on
Thursday and Talent Roundup Day on Friday. "Y? Because we LIKE you!"

October 28, 1999 marks the 2nd Anniversary of BP and happens to fall in
the
National Massage Therapy Awareness Week - I recommend to the Shaman that
a
combined celebration be organized.
