I'm from Chicago originally.  And I learned left from right on that lakefront.

The distinction had given me a lot of trouble.  I remember saying to
one of my parents, okay, let's settle this.  Which way is left and
which way is right?

I was on the beach, looking north.  Left, it turned out, was toward
land, right was toward the lake.  I never forgot again.  That image is
still in my mind.
