Published in The New York Times August 14, 1913:

"To the Editor of The New York Times:

"Can any of your readers explain why English ivy refuses to cling to the
brick walls of my house erected a year ago? The ivy was planted last
November on the north side of the house, and is growing profusely, but its
suckers, of which there are plenty, do not take hold of the brick. The walls
are common Hackensack (N. J.) brick, with good rough surface, and when the
house was completed they were washed with a solution of muriatic acid to
remove the white scale from the brick. An American ivy planted on the west
side seems to cling without difficulty.
