In 1853, the New York Times reported on the laying of the cornerstone of
Cooper Union (at Astor Place and Fourth Avenue) by the iron magnate Peter
Cooper.  He "laid on the mortar with a bold and workmanlike hand as though he
had been brought up in the business .... he took to mortar like a brick."
