I wondered if one requirement at the tryouts was "Make the people feel the
pain of your singing."  Maybe the woman took it too literally.

I thought the opera singer at the big NYC lantern lighting last Monday was
particularly terrible. I was so entranced by my realizing how bad I thought
she was that I did not switch the channel on the radio and listened to the
end. Technical perfection and no emotion. It hit my barf index square on.
