Larry,

I have seen wood rusticated to look like stone, particularly quoins at
corners... but the one who can probably put most light on this for us is
John Leeke up in Portland, Maine.

I was introduced in CT a few years ago to the seat of a 2-holer that GW
was reputed to have sat on. It was painted up white with all sorts of
colorful patriotic flags and such painted on it and hung on the wall w/
mirrors for the business. The current owners were very proud of it.

As far as I know there is no distinction between a privie and an
outhouse though it could have been a subtle cultural difference in which
people did not want to say that their outhouses were privies. If there
is an actual difference I would like to know also.

> I have been reading a Writers Guide to Everyday Life In Colonial Times, by Dale Taylor. In the chapter on architecture he even gives floor plans. When discussing wall construction, he mentions riven siding and sawn weatherboard and then, "At the extreme was rustication (fashioning wood to look like dressed stone), a technique George Washington used on the facade of MT. Vernon."

> Also he mentioned the use of privies. I had read somewhere else that outhouses were not used in that period, and wondered what the difference is. Is anyone privy to that information?
