If you want the radio in one piece as I did, you can buy a base plage 
with a handle on the side that lets you bolt radio and head to that 
large plage..

I agree with your thoughts.  Why not have the microphone plug into the 
head?  They do the same on the tmv-71a dual band radio.  Too much 
Japanese wine?
