Well, this is m f j..;  Yes to both questions, I've used the microphone on
the 590 and reprogrammed the buttons.  You do not need the batteries,
Kenwood powers it through the connector.  If you are at all picky on your
transmit audio, this microphone isn't that great, lacks highs.  I have one
here and I don't use it for that reason, the buttons are convenient, but I
was not pleased with the audio reports I got.  I did a check on blind hams
net and other places, all same results.
