In my experience, the signal had to be s9or better and have no and I mean no 
background noise like static or line noise.  Also digital doesn't like 
multipath or fading at all.  That's why I say that voice over digital for 
ham applications has a long way to go before it passes the smell test for 
me!

HI Bob,

Regarding the codec2 software, how weak must that signal go before the byte
error rate becomes unusable and the system unlocks?  In addition how does
the system handle fading and multipath?
