You are exactly correct, again. So, for now I am going to leave my 6M JP
issue as is and instead focus on a better ANT1 for 10M - 160M; which is a
43' vertical.

I think most guys running serious power on 6 meters use something better
than a J-pole, but we all do what we have to do.
For what it's worth: I only run 100 watts from a 590 to a Hex beam that
needs no tuner at the low end of the 6 meter band. I have found that I
need to disconnect the interface cable from the radio to the 998 tuner when
on 6 meters. Otherwise the low swr spot is in the middle of the
band, whether the tuner is in bypass or even turned off.
I understand what you are trying to do in getting the amp's output to
the 6 meter antenna through the 998 in bypass mode. My experience
above may be peculiar to my setup, but I would check with MFJ before
putting a KW through the tuner in bypass mode on 6 meters, no matter what
antenna you are using.
Don't know how much 6 meterQRO stuff you really do, and if undoing a few
cables each time you work 6 is a deal breaker. Perhaps with some coax
jumpers and switches, you could simplify the changeover. What's a few more
bucks?
