Thanks to John w9vg, the knob is fixed, and with out a scratch.  Had to use
a long needle nose to turn the nut, 

Had to pry the rubber ring off with thin screw driver blades.

We also turned around the rubber outside of the knob on the ts-480.

Its easier to grasp now.  John had set up his in his car this way, he has no
idea how he thought of it.
