Well, I admit the risk isn't great, but hackers can scan other ports. If you
do a comprehensive port scan at Steve Gibson's grc.com site, it would probably
show 5198, 5199 and 5200 as opened. The normal ShieldsUp test doesn't scan
those ports, though, you would need to run the comprehensive port probe.

Again, it's probably not a major whoop and there might be greater risks to
ports below a thousand, but if you're paranoid about it, you would close them.

My solution: I opened the ports in my router, but I also have a software
firewall.

No need to close those ports, when you close EchoLink there is nothing for
the outside world to talk to (on that port) until you start the program
again.

This brings up a question I've been meaning to ask. If you are using a
router and open up the appropriate ports in order for echolink to work,
should you close them again when you're through with echolink in order to
protect your machine against outside intruders etc.?

Wouldn't leaving them open defeat the firewall protection provided by a
router?

Thanks,

Hi Everyone;

Thank you, all of you for your suggestions.

My friend Tony came over and now ECHOLINK works just fine.

We needed to tell the modem to let ECHOLINK use the ports.

Thanks again to everyone.
