That's a nice thing about some of the MFJ auto tuners, and the Palstar
Auto. They have a relay to unkey the amp during a tune cycle. Will
also unkey in the event of a high SWR during operation.

The Power Master meter, and the Wavenode (which I have) will also unkey
  for high SWR.

What kills solid state amps is high SWR, too much reflected power, or
too much drive. Amp set to wrong band, wrong antenna, high SWR, or
some catastrophic failure of the antenna or feed line can be causes.
The amps have protection circuits, but sometimes things happen. My THP
SS amp has the same sorts of protection, but I try and be extra careful.

As for overdrive: Ameritron says you can drive with 100 watts. Since
you only need 50 - 60 watts to get full power (depending on band), I
would be leery of this. From what I've read, there is a swamping
resistor in the input that allows for the full 100 watts of drive to be
used. If the resistor changes value over time the full 100 watts can
hit the finals, and el smoke arino.
