Thanks for the additional info, Howard.

Today, I'm going to try installing adwCleaner and see if it helps.

Tom, I am getting in on this late.
MSE is not recommended as your main anti-virus software, and that comes from
microsoft.
The problem may be connected to a toolbar, that gets installed silently
theese days.
Ccleaner is very good, as well as revo uninstaller.
It works like add remove programs, only much better.
Google avg and ask toolbars can make problems that we can't see.

I don't know anything about AdwCleaner, but Microsoft Security Essentials
has also missed viruses. Ask KB5FNW about that.

Harvey:

I'm thinking of adding AdwCleaner, which has been highly recommended to me
by a number of people on this list, and on other lists I belong to.

I currently use AVG, but am thinking of switching to Microsoft Essentials as
my main anti-virus program.

AVG found no virus on my computer, nor did the guys at the computer shop
here in town where I took the PC last week.

I'd consider messing with the popup blocker settings, but since the problem
only started occuring a few weeks ago, I can't imagine that would be my
problem in this particular situation.
