I've noticed that, but to do my best I have had to use full power.  My
Motorola Expo is like that too.  The battery packs I have are a couple of
years old or more, and they have an incredible life.  I use the Expo to DX
on VHF, and it can pull things in from rather far away in these openings
with the two freqs I have in them that used to be our old public safety
freqs before they went to 800 MHz trunking.
