The coax is RG8X, and was purchased from Ham Radio Outlet in Denver.

How exactly would I check for a non-contaminating jacket?

                        Tom,

Check if your coax has what is known as a non contaminating jacket.  This
means that it is much more resistant to being buried in the ground and I
assume moisture and water.  Some coax cables can be left on the ground or
buried in a shallow trench so that the grass can grow over them in a few
years.
