That's approximately the technique I use on the FT-950 also.  The 950 has a nice feature called TXW which allows you to push a button while in receive mode to listen to your transmit frequency and adjust it if necessary.  You can't transmit while holding down that button, and it it reverts to normal split operation when you release it.  With so many buttons on the front panel of the 950, I put Dymo tape with single braille characters or dots on strategic buttons and on the VFO B and Select knobs.  

Last weekend I didn't use Split, but made 697 QSO's and 204 multipliers in the ARRL DX contest.  Lots of fun.
