Mike,

You can't expect the same performance from a portable that you get from a
high-end receiver. That said, however, I think this Sony is about as good a
portable radio as you can find. It's small, easy to use, and as others have
said, has good selectivity and dynamic range for a portable radio. As far
as I know, it's the only portable in it's price range that has synchronous
detection, and said synchronous detection works quite well. I've found that
mine works better if you use the wire antenna that comes with the radio
instead of the internal whip, although this might not be as much of a
problem if I were operating the radio in a less noisy environment, such as
outdoors. I'll test that when the weather warms up, but I have no desire to
take the radio outside in the middle of a New England winter.

If you really want this radio, you'd better move fairly quickly since Sony
is discontinuing it according to the sales people at HRO. On the other
hand, if you're willing to wait, you might be able to pick up a used one for
less than the $131 Amazon price which, by the way, is substantially cheaper
than the original price of $189.

Steve
