Mike, you are right that in some areas there was activity.  I do not however have a good feel for how widely this was the case.

Also, in answer to another of Jeffery's question, I think the reason many of us ran into conflicts with the school administration is that we were doing  something different and not expected and thus not fitting the mold  caused  negative reactions toward us.  

I recall having a devil of a time explaining to the school superintendent  that simply winding a ac cord  around your hand span would not damage the cord.  I never did convince him and my parents ate the cost of putting a new ac cord on a Sony real to real.  I cannot count the number of my extension cords over the years that developed a this to them from being rolled up many times.  Ah well and they say the kids have it easy in school these days but that is another soap box.

True enough.  However, there was a lot of two meter * A M* activity in the
Portland/Vancouver area in the late '50's/early '60's (as late as 1965).
I spent many a happy hour on two-meter A M
