Hello Blake,
There are actually two scanners I would recommend as very useable by a
person who is blind.

The one I use, no longer being made, is the GRE PSR500 handheld scanner
(mobile version: PSR600). I mention the PSR500/600 because it is very
useable, and there is a very accessible software app for programming it. The
app allows you to not only program the scanner to receive both analog and
digital trunked radio systems, it allows you to enter and modify text tags
(useful if you're sharing the scanner with a sighted person or want someone
to be able to glance at your scanner and tell you what is being received at
the moment), set up talk groups to be scanned together, lock/unlock scanned
items, set audio and visual alerts, and more. Although this scanner is no
longer being manufactured (a recent development because GRE suddenly stopped
production), it is well worth your while, if you can find it new (highly
sought after and commanding top dollar), or used in good condition (same as
above).

The second scanner which is being used very successfully by those who are
blind is the Uniden BCD396XT handheld scanner (mobile version: BCD996XT.
This scanner is also very useable and there is accessible software available
to program it.

Best regards,

Does anyone recommend a trunking scanner? Maybe one that is computer
programmable? Can I use the rest of the functions? I know Uniden has a home
patrol scanner.

Thanks and 73,
