Measuring SWR

Many years ago, I connected a normal SWR meter in the antenna line and connected my audible volt meter device across the visual meter movement. I then could read the voltages across the meter in the forward and reverse switch positions and calculate the SWR. Can't remember any more what was the formula but it seemed to be the best way to do it back then. That was the early 70's.
