any thoughts on why the built in sound chip won't work?
USB isn't a problem, just curious as to why the onboard one won't do the job 
since it's supposed to be multi-channel HD etc.  Or at least that is what I 
am lead to believe...perhaps not.

Had to use an external sound module got hold of a USB sound module for
around $6.00 from Amazon.
My buddy lost my Pi, so I am waiting for the Pi 2 to arive.

There is a version of Ubuntu Mate
For the Raspberry Pi.
It is  called, "ubuntu_mate_orca.img"
I can put a copy in my Drop Box folder, and send you the link if you want
it.
Ifffffffffffu do a search on Google you should ind it.

working on that very thing right now with a friend who has an excellent
working knowledge of linux and the Pie.
I will give you any updates and instructions I figure out...and if you find
