Howard,

If you haven't already done so, check to see that your electrical
system is actually grounded to something in the real world.  Often,
especially in older houses, they are not.  If you're getting that
much hum, you probably have several electrical problems.  If I were
you, I'd bite the bullet and have a qualified electrician check
things out and fix whatever's wrong.  It may cost more than you'd
like to spend, but it's worth it in the long run.
