Radio Canada International used to have such a strapping signal down here 
in New York State that I once picked them up on a modified two transistor 
AM Radio kit that Radio Shack sold.  I merely shorted out a few turns on 
the ferrite inductor and voila!  Shortwave!  And RCI came through quite 
nicely, too.  I was probably in about eighth grade when I conducted that 
little experiment!
