I don't think I'd go with a 47-incher, I think it would be too long when 
traversing.  If you have the HT up talking, the tip of that antenna would be 
ten feet up.

I also don't like telescopic antennas any more.  If the sections get lose or 
bent over time, then your signal can get scratchy.  Just my 2 cents.
