Hi.

Since you asked my opinion, here it is.  Lightning Surge Protectors are
useful for preventing damage from near misses.  Solid state rigs,
especially HF and shortwave gear, do not have to receive a direct hit to be
damaged--a near miss can induce a large enough surge on a long piece of
wire to do plenty of damage to the radio's front end, anyway.  These
devices are good for limiting that type of damage, especially the gas
discharge type of protectors.

However, the best protection against a direct hit is a paid-up insurance
policy.  Enough said.
