As John said, 17 is a super band.  I've had 17 meters open in the middle of
the night to Europe.  For over a week, I worked Europeans all over the band
from 10 PM local till 2 o'clock in the morning so I make it a habit to check
17 meters even very late at night if I am up.  Don't forget the CW beacons
on 18.110 which will help give an indication, every three minutes, if the
band is open.
