Well if Tom gives you a good deal on his house, you could afford  one. 
Yeah they aren't cheap, and I think it is one reason you are seeing others 
offer the antenna or parts to roll your own.

I can't picture in my mind what it is supposed to look like, but if you 
purchase the parts and  build it your self, it would be cheaper no doubt.  I 
think the main components are the center post and the spreaders.
