Hi Jim,
MFJ does have quality control problems, but if you get one that
is in
good working order you will have a great tuner. MFJ does stand
behind their units if you find a problem under warranty. I had
no
problem with mine. If you are running a Kenwood and have the
right
cable, the antenna button on the Kenwood will cause the power to
drop
while tuning and tune the MFJ to resonance. A button on the MFJ
allows you to switch between two antennas, so if your transceiver
has
two antenna jacks you would only use the one that runs to the
tuner. The manual is available recorded if you would like to
read
more detail about it. If you have specific questions, I'll try
to
answer them.

HRO recommended me not to buy that one so I ended up with an
LDG-AT600 which I used for 5 minutes and found it not very blind
friendly because it used a series of LED's on the front panel. I
think they also said the quality control of the MFJ product was
not very good so I am tunerless at least when I use the amp.
Fortunately, the amp as you know has good protection against too
high an SWR so it just clicks off if it doesn't like the signal
coming back down the coax. Would like to hear more of your
observations about the MFJ-998 tuner. What is the price for it?
