Ah, yes. As Junior pointed out, the Browning Eagle rigs had that 
"ping" at the beginning of each transmission.

It was, of course, simply audio feedback from the receiver just before 
it muted.

That sound became a trademark of sorts for Browning, but was initially 
a mistake in the manufacturing process.  An extra capacitor had 
somehow been written into the design when the first production run of 
Eagles was released.

Browning wanted to fix that "problem," but soon discovered they had a 
unique sales gimmick that would make the Eagle "just another expensive 
radio" if it was fixed. So they very wisely left it alone.
