    Thanks for another great suggestion, Howard.  But isn't the headphone 
jack on the TS480 control head disabled once you plug in the external 
speaker?

I'll have to try this.

If you plug the speaker in to the headphone jack on the head, rather than
the speaker jack on the base, you'll have a lower drive to the speaker.
Maybe that will help.  I haven't seen a step adjustment for the side tone.
