Not thinking too clearly so early on a Sunday morning.

Will definitely try your suggestion, because it makes perfect sense, the 
more I think about it.

If you plug the speaker in to the headphone jack on the head, rather than
the speaker jack on the base, you'll have a lower drive to the speaker.
Maybe that will help.  I haven't seen a step adjustment for the side tone.
