Phil that's more of a function of fear of the unknown than anything else.  As far as loss goes, I lost my dad in 2003 and as far as I was concerned, it was merciful because he didn't realize how much he was suffering because of his Alzheimer's.  Fortunately my brother who is a psychiatric nurse helped take care of him the last 3 months of his life.
