What radios did you have,  I have a Kenwood TH-F6A triband hand held and
that's very useable, I'm blind and I haven't ever asked for sighted help on
that radio. I don't know of any more that you can program with out the
software, but I'm sure they're out there. I'd look at Kenwood radios
personally though I've never had an Icom hand held from recent years, just
an old IC-3AT but that hasn't been made in years.
