The LM317 is the old standby of adjustable 3 terminal voltage regulators.
The standard unit is only good for 1.5 amps but I'm pretty sure there is a 3
amp version. Would require a small box or other aluminum heat sink. I'm sure
your tech buddies can handle that if no other choice.
