Thanks very much. I will look in to that. The cable end that
plugs in to the radio reminds me exactly of the microphone plugs
we used to see on cassette recorders except that both are
3-terminal plugs. In normal operation, an external microphone
and head set  plug in there.

	Is that what the Kenwood cables look like?

	I have a Kenwood cable for a TM-71. It has a female
RS-232 on the computer end and a RJ45 on the radio end and it
works like a charm.

	Linux is a lot better than it used to be about USB
adapters, but some of them still choke if they need special
drivers.
