    Again,  I have the PG5G interface cable, which works perfectly for the 
rig programming.

Not sure exactly what the other cables do.

So need the data cable not an interface cable for programming the radio from
the computer?

As far as the computer interface, there is a programming cable only, and a
data cable and interface cable for net link.  I just bought the data
cable.  The software is free.  The data cable just makes programming
easier, so that is up to you.
