Richard,

You would need to power the 998 with external power. It needs (if I
remember) about 1 amp at a nominal 12 vdc. The connection to the
radio via the interface cable does not provide power to this tuner,
since the current draw is greater than what the radio provides on that 6
pin molex connector.

The 998 is rated for full legal limit, so maybe overkill for your
station. Also it doesn't cover 6 meters.

There are tuners rated at less power than the 998 which get the needed
12 vdc from the tuner, but you could power the 998 via a proper sized
wall wart, or even the station's main power supply.

There is also a remote version of the 998 which could be mounted at the
base of your vertical, but I'm not familiar with this one.

Some have had QC issues with this tuner and others weren't happy for
some reason or another, but I have had one for about 6 years with no
problems.

If it can't find a match, it will give a series of long beeps after a
very long tuning attempt. It has a crude system of beeps for giving a
swr readout, but i really don't use it. There are menus, but they
wrap around and you would need sighted help to get things setup
(maybe). It's been years, and I don't recall ever needing to get back
into menus for anything.

I think the 993 is the little brother, rated at less power. Cheaper
and maybe draws power from the rig, but not positive.

73, Steve KW3A
